A lovely twist on a children’s cookbook, The Official Fablehaven Cookbook offers recipes with a side of fun and a smidgen of mythology. Including a new story from the Fablehaven universe, The Mull family has assembled a delightful and child-in-the-kitchen-friendly assemblage of themed recipes.

Periodically this children’s cookbook uses premade (like a cake mix) ingredients, which gives the option of recipes being more handmade, but not worrying overly much about homemade, as the goal is to be in the kitchen with your kid and to have fun! Other times it offers fully homemade offerings which are given delightful names to correspond with the Fablehaven character’s favorite dishes.

At the end of the book are the non-edible recipes, including those for slime and the kinds of bubble-blo that lasts practically forever, even for big bubbles. If you have a Fablehaven fan and would like to tempt them into spending time with you in the kitchen, this is an excellent choice! The recipes are clear, with good picture illustrations, and good instructions. For example, the Caramel Apple recipe starts from scratch, with corn syrup and brown sugar, but explains thoroughly and carefully what is needed to be successful.

While some things in Fablehaven’s offering have options like starting with a cake mix, there are many others, like pretzel knots, their hot cocoa (which sounds, frankly, amazing), and many others which are both home and hand made. Lots of fun for the whole family.
