Last year saw the publication of two books on Eugene England — Stretching the Heavens: The Life of Eugene England and the Crisis of Modern Mormonism by Terryl Givens and Eugene England: A Mormon Liberal by Kristine L. Haglund.

England is a foundational figure for the field of Mormon Studies and especially for the Association for Mormon Letters. Not only was he a founding member and past president, he also focused much of his scholarly output and volunteer efforts on defining, evaluating, excavating, editing, writing, and encouraging the field of Mormon literature, including his landmark bibliographic and literary-period defining essay “Mormon Literature: Progress and Prospects” (which was published in several forms and venues during the 1990s; link is to PDF).

For our 2022 conference, the Association for Mormon Letters seeks papers and panel ideas that focus on either the progress made in the field of Mormon literature, its future prospects, or both.

Intersection with the work of Eugene England is welcome but not required as the conference organizers will be putting together specific programming on England and the two recent books about him and his legacy.

The conference will be held virtually the evenings of Thursday, July 21, and Friday, July 22, and the morning of Saturday, July 23, and will include an online discussion space. The AML is also exploring in-person programming for the afternoon and evening of July 23rd. Any in-person programming will either be streamed live or recorded for later viewing.

Papers should be 8 – 12 minutes long, and we’re looking at potentially pre-recording individual papers. Panels will be broadcast live and should include 4-6 individuals with a designated moderator and specific topic and be 50-55 minutes in length (including time for Q&A).

A reminder that the Association for Mormon Letters defines Mormon literature as literature that is by, for, or about Mormons. We are also open to a wide variety of literary forms and genres. While our focus is on the literary, we do accept proposals on other forms of Mormon art.

To submit a paper proposal or panel idea, please click here and fill out the form. Paper abstracts and panel ideas should be no more than 350 words in length. The submissions deadline is April 30, 2022.
