Review books for the AML blog!

As the Book Review Editor for the Association for Mormon Letters, I am putting out an invitation to interested readers to join our book review panel. We receive books to review from publishers and authors, and I commission members of the review panel to write book reviews, which we publish here on the blog.

Here is how it works:

  • I send out an email with a list of books that are “Up for Review” to the panel members. They will come from a variety of publishers including Deseret Book, Signature Books, various university publishers, and occasionally national publishers.
  • You respond and tell me which books you are interested in and I try to be fair and divvy out the books.
  • A book will be shipped from the publisher to you. SOMETIMES I can get a digital, usually a pdf copy as well.
  • Once your book arrives, you are supposed to get me your review in 30 days.
  • I will send you a from in Word format (.doc or .docx) It will have a header to fill out (name of book, name of publisher, number of pages, binding, etc). You can type your review in whatever program you use, PLEASE just return it to me in Word format.
  • There is no rule on length. I get some that are fairly short, and some that are fairly long.  800ish words seems to be common. Just make it long enough for the complexity of the book and the potential audience for the book.
  • You can write your review as simply or as complex as you want. However, I retain the right to refuse to publish a review if I feel that it does not meet our standards.
  • We publish reviews of a variety of books, including scholarly books from university presses, novels, kids’ books, cookbooks, inspirational books, etc. Keep the expected audience of the book in mind as you write your review.
  • The books can range from books by general authorities for active Mormons to books that are critical of aspects of Mormonism. Be sure to consider the intended audience of THAT book. Write an honest review, but please do not start a review with the intention of criticizing an author’s fundamental position.
  • When the review is done, you send me the review, and you keep the book!
  • I get that life is busy and things happens, BUT we are getting free books and the publishers DO expect reviews for their expense, so PLEASE try and et me the reviews on time, especially if they are from smaller or university publishers.

IF you are interested, please email me at ahamilton@csi.edu (I teach English Comp at the college of Southern Idaho)

Here are our current reviews if you are curious https://www.associationmormonletters.org/reviews/current-reviews/

THANKS!

Andrew Hamilton

  1. Free books! What’s not to like! I have been doing this for about 7 years, and have really enjoyed it. 60 reviews and counting!
