This is undeniably weird, but wonderfully so. I was totally sucked into this alternate universe, where Mormons and vampires have a shared history and vampires still roam. This is a fast-paced, wild murder mystery that grabs you and doesn’t let go. It may not be for everyone, but if the blend of a paranormal mystery blended with Mormonism and secrets and conspiracies sounds intriguing to you, then you better pick this up immediately. There’s lots of fascinating and wild and intriguing stuff at play here and I think it all comes together to make some insightful comments about the way Mormonism seems to outsiders, the dangers and skeletons in our history, the intricate relationships we have with people and groups that we try to paint as enemies, and I felt as I was reading that I could do an interesting queer and polygamist reading of the story, but I haven’t quite pieced together all the details. Anyway, this is a wild, weird, incredibly engrossing book and I can’t wait to dive back into Jack’s adventures and see what else Mette has to offer in this wild, weird world she’s created.
